However, thanks to the modding community, this problem has been unofficially resolved, and very quickly too.
Modder’s okt04175 and alan2350 have developed a new mod that allows the game to run on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 devices.
The mod works by tweaking the OS detection behaviour of the game when you load it up.
The installation of the mod is not too hard either, and only requires players to download four files and patch the gameâs main.exe file.
Fortunately, the PC mudding community has come up with a patch that will allow these users to run the title on Windows 7, 8, as well as Windows 8.1.
God of War PC had an incredible launch day, and Steam saw a concurrent player count that peaked at somewhere close to 50,000 users on the platform.
How to Download and Install God of War on PC Windows 7, 8 and 10
This software modifies the OS detection behavior in the game, which unlocks it for Microsoftâs older operating systems.
Step 1: Download all the necessary files
Users will need to download the mod files, which are available at (https://www.nexusmods.com/godofwar/mods/16?tab=description). This will include doitsujinâs dxvk file, HansKristian-Workâs vkd3d-proton file, Sporifâs DXVK-Async Patch file and marco-calauttiâs DeltaPatcher file.
Step 2: Patch the GoW.exe file
After all the required files are downloaded, users can patch the gameâs main GoW.exe executable file from the directory using the DeltaPatcher file you just downloaded.
Step 3: Copy the DLL files to the game directory
Copy the two downloaded DLL files to the gameâs main directory (the same folder as the GoW.exe file). These are the DXVK d3d11.dll and dxgi.dll files.
This should be enough to make the game run on your machine. If the above methods donât cut it, players can apply the DXVK-Async Patch to launch the game as well as install Vulkan Runtime if you donât have it installed.
Note that the result of installing these unofficial patches is the fact that the game will no longer run on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
